
Body image dissatisfaction
Body image dissatisfaction and its related mental health disorders are on the rise, especially among adolescents, affecting girls more than boys comparatively. It is estimated than about 50% of adolescents are living with various degrees of body image dissatisfaction. It is highly associated with anxiety, depression and mental health disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder etc.).
It is on the rise, mostly due to social media and other forms of media putting out highly impossible and idealistic images of men and women, which have become ideal forms of beauty. Even toned fairness, impossible standards of body measurements have fueled the billion dollar beauty and cosmetic industry. It also fueled rising anxiety, depression regarding body image, body dysmorphia and eating disorders.
We already know the unhealthy obsession with fairness in India. Working with adolescents, almost all of them have some form of body dysmorphia and dissatisfaction; sometimes being perpetuated by family and extended family members in our experience.

Our approach to body image dissatisfaction is initially through active empathic listening. We know how distressing it feels to be uncomfortable in our own body and society does not make it easier on us either.

We at Safe Space Counselling wish to question and change how society defines beauty, because beauty should not have a narrow definition and definitely should not be based on physical appearance. A person is so much more than how they look.

We believe in holistic approach to therapy. We understand the concern holistically through case histories, which helps us understand the root causes and the factors that are maintaining the concerns.

An individual is heavily shaped by his/her environment and cannot be understood without knowing their environmental background. So, with permission, we involve people who can help the individual manage and deal with body image dissatisfaction.

Self-esteem, anxiety and depression are heavily intertwined with body image dissatisfaction, we aim to deal them through dealing with the root causes.

Our approach is a combination of Cognitive Behavior Therapy which helps in dealing with negative internal thoughts about body/physical appearance and reshaping/disputing them. We also use behavioral techniques such as exposure therapy, relaxation methods.

In line with our goal of self-reliance strategies, techniques and worksheets are provided to the individual that help them in dealing with body image dissatisfaction.
